Healthy Chocolate Milk Startup Slate Ends $5 Million Seed Round After Rejecting “Shark Tank”

Boston-based startup Slate, co-founded by friends Manny Lubin and Josh Belinsky, created a healthier version of classic chocolate milk but passed a rough patch shortly after launch. The judges weren’t impressed when the founder duo unveiled an early prototype at Shark Tank in 2019: “Oh, I don’t like it at all!” Mark Cuban after a sip I heard him screaming. Shark companions Kevin O’Leary and Barbara Corcoran also quoted the “small funky chicken” element and “clear dryness” of the product, respectively, during the taste test. According to Rubin, prototypes of these products were never put on the shelves. After spending a year deprescribing, Slate launched the first product, made with 17 grams of protein, 9 grams of sugar, 130 calories per can, and sweetened with a combination of sugar cane and monk fruit.
